Our audits are carried out independently, providing objective recommendations focused solely on improving road safety.
Stage 1: Road Safety Audits are carried out following completion of the initial design phase. The assessment focuses on safety factors that could affect property acquisition, legal licences or easements. It must be completed before draft orders are officially published or planning permission is requested.
For minor schemes where the initial design phase is omitted, the Stage 1 assessment can be combined with the Stage 2 audit during the detailed design phase. This is known as a Combined Stage 1 and 2 Road Safety Audit.
Stage 2: Road Safety Audits are carried out once the final design has been completed. At this stage, the audit team considers the specific technical elements of the highway project, including the layout, signage, road markings and street lighting.
The review also considers drainage systems, footways, road surfacing, kerbs, structural details and landscaping.
Stage 3: Road Safety Audits take place after construction is complete, ideally before the road is opened to the public. Your existing copy also states that new or improved highway schemes should undergo this assessment within 30 days of opening.
The audit team assesses the completed infrastructure from the perspective of all potential road users, often inspecting the site by driving, walking or cycling. The audit is carried out during both daytime and nighttime hours to identify potential hazards that may only become apparent in darkness.
Stage 4: Road Safety Audits are undertaken after a completed highway scheme opens to monitor its safety performance in accordance with GG119. The audit includes reviewing and analysing personal injury collision data, alongside site inspections, to identify any emerging road safety issues.
Under GG119, Stage 4 monitoring is typically carried out 12 months and 36 months after the scheme opens to traffic. This allows sufficient collision data to be collected and assessed. The findings help determine whether additional safety measures or remedial works are needed to further improve safety for all road users.
