A Road Safety Audit is an independent assessment of a proposed highway improvement or new road scheme, carried out to identify potential safety issues before the scheme is brought into use. Its primary purpose is to help reduce the likelihood and severity of future collisions by ensuring that road safety considerations are fully integrated into the design process.
The audit considers the needs of all road users, including vulnerable groups such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and equestrians. Where potential safety concerns are identified, practical recommendations are provided to help improve the overall safety of the scheme.
At the heart of every Road Safety Audit is a simple but important question:
"How could road users be affected, and what measures can be taken to reduce the risk?"
Road Safety Audits are carried out by a Road Safety Audit Team, usually comprising a Team Leader and a Team Member. The team must have the necessary experience in collision investigation and road safety engineering, together with a detailed understanding of highway design principles, requirements and best practice.
David A Graham Associates' Road Safety Audit Teams have the experience required to undertake audits in accordance with GG119 of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB). The company also holds the National Highways Certificate of Competence in Road Safety Audit, enabling its teams to undertake audits on the strategic road network, including trunk roads and motorways.
